When Dealing With Colon Cancer A Good Physician Might Make The Difference Between Life And Death

I will always remember the moment I discovered I had cancer. As a lawyer I had handled claims involving the delayed diagnosis of cancer and yet even this experience had not prepared me for listening to those words applied to me. Given that I had worked as a delayed diagnosis of cancer lawyer and knew the symptoms of various different kinds of cancers, including advanced colon cancer I did not wait when I started to encounter symptoms myself. I saw my primary care physician who agreed that while I was too young for routine screening for colon cancer and although I had no family history of colon cancer (at the time) that I should nonetheless undergo a colonoscopy to rule out cancer as the cause of my symptoms.

The colonoscopy found that I had a substantial cancerous tumor and surgery verified that it had by then started spreading. The cancer was stage 3 colon cancer. Not good news. I knew there was a positive part of this was that at least it was not stage 4 colon cancer. Still it was nonetheless metastatic colon cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. And I had an instant of real fear and doubt when I was given the news. I realized that my chances of long term survival were just about even. Regardless of the fact that I was an attorney and had previously handled medical malpractice claims, even lawsuits regarding colon cancer, did not stop that instant of real panic and fear. For at that moment I believed I not survive the cancer

At that moment I called a friend who was also an attorney and had been one of my mentors. I believe it was pure instinct that I reached out to him first. He was completely straightforward about everything. This was precisely what I neededat the time. Someone else to express out loud what the reality was and what had to be done. He then offered to help with whatever I needed. And later the managing partner at the firm, another good friend, offered to handle all my cases during my treatment. He offered to do this, not for any compensation, but just out of friendship. I have alwats been grateful to him for that.

Although I needed a couple of weeks to recuperate following surgery and even though there were times during the chemotherapy when I just did not feel well enough to do anything, I was, for the most part, able to keep working. This gave me tremendous satisfaction. I felt that I was able to carry my weight and lead pretty much a normal life during my treatment and seven years later I exhibit no evidence of cancer. If I had waited perhaps even a few months the cancer could have spread further and I probably would not have survived.

Clearly, should you have symptoms suggestive of colon cancer ungerdoing the right test immediately may save your life. The best way to give oneself the greatest treatment options and the greatest likelihood defeating the cancer is to diagnose and treat it early.

When a doctor fails to make a suitable referral or order proper tests given complaints of symptoms (especially blood in the stool) and the person eventually dies because of the cancer, then a wrongful death attorney might be able to assist the family.
